Watch as Palencia Mobley, Deputy Director and Chief Engineer of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD), and Carol Hufnagel, National Wet Weather Practice Leader for Tetra Tech, share their presentation from WEFTEC 2021 in Chicago.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department implemented green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) in the Aviation neighborhood, both to reduce the amount of flow going to the combined sewer system and to help reduce surcharging that was resulting in basement backups. Immediately after the implementation of the project, the City of Detroit was hit with multiple storms that had rainfall well in excess of a 10-year storm event.

This presentation provides an overview of the project, how the city interfaced with the community, and how the project performed during these major wet weather conditions. It highlights that while GSI can be a major contributor to flood reduction, the best performance will result from an integrated solution of system improvements.
