Asset management, at its most effective and robust form, involves five core concepts (level of service, current state of the assets, criticality, life-cycle costing, and long-term funding) and can take considerable time and effort to fully develop and implement. While this approach has the opportunity to provide maximum benefits to the utility, it can also take considerable time and effort and feel overwhelming to an organization. When it feels overwhelming, an organization may choose to continue business as usual and receive none of the substantial rewards of asset management practice. Alternatively, asset management principles can be applied to solve particular problems to address pressing concerns or priority issues. As problems are solved in one area, asset management can be used to solve problems in other areas. This approach builds the program more slowly over time in a horizontal, rather than vertical, way that can move at a sustainable pace for the organization.. In the meantime, the utility/system will see successes along the way that can help build support for additional effort. As improvements increase, the utility may be able to engage in a more robust asset management program. This webinar will discuss ways in which asset management can be deployed in a more targeted way to solve issues and prevent it from becoming overwhelming.
