Microplastics have been found in surface water bodies worldwide, from remote mountain streams to deep ocean trenches. Scientists have confirmed their presence in the Arctic, Antarctic, and even uninhabited islands. Detecting and analyzing microplastics in the environment requires a combination of physical, chemical, and spectroscopic techniques. Utilities, engineering firms, and laboratories have been paying attention to this emerging contaminant and will be sharing their experiences with this ubiquitous pollutant. Additional information about specific methods being developed and deployed at ASTM and ISO will also be covered.
