While watersheds throughout the United States continue to be plagued by the same persistent hydrophobic organic and heavy metal toxic contaminants which spurred on the passage of the Clean Water Act and the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency in the 1970’s, watershed managers today are dealing with a broader suite of contaminants. Through consideration of recent watershed case studies, the webinar will call attention to several contemporary contaminants including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, human metabolites, chlorides, and per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Collectively, the featured ongoing case studies in Wisconsin, North Carolina, and California watersheds will highlight watershed issues related to monitoring; source tracking; fate and transport; toxicity; biological impairments; and regulation.
