Both day and night, utility operators, scientists, and advocates work tirelessly to ensure that their communities enjoy continued access to the world’s most vital natural resource: water. Although water quality professionals often work long hours and perform a crucial public service, they earn little recognition for their efforts to preserve both human and environmental health.

Water Environment & Technology Photo Contests aim to make the important work of the water sector more visible.

Submit your best photos to us for a chance to win exclusive WE&T prizes, which could include apparel, safety gear, educational resources, and more. Contests will be held every three months with different themes.

To participate, visit the Water Environment Federation Facebook page. Simply upload your photo and provide some basic information about what it depicts. Your photo will be added to an online gallery, where you and other water quality professionals can vote for your favorite photos.

Three winning photos with the highest number of votes will be selected on October 30, 2018. We'll print those photos in an upcoming issue of WE&T, and their submitters will receive prizes.

“Word Out for Water” Photo Contest

Despite the immeasurable contributions of water and wastewater professionals to our health, habitat, and happiness, many customers regard these services as just another utility bill.

High-profile water supply issues such as Cape Town, South Africa’s drought crisis and contamination in Flint, Michigan, increasingly push the importance of proper treatment and water sustainability into the public eye. With water shortages looming in many parts of the globe, there has perhaps never been a better time for water professionals to teach their communities about using water responsibly, lift the veil on what goes on in a water resource recovery facility, and demonstrate the true value of water.

The Water Environment & Technology Autumn 2018 photo contest focuses on how utility professionals, equipment manufacturers, scientists, and engineers get the “Word Out for Water” at the local level.

By October 30, share photos of how you show your community that Water’s Worth It. Snap a photo during tours of your facility or from civic events, school presentations, or seminars. Show us how you mentor the next generation of water professionals. Exhibiting at WEFTEC 2018 in New Orleans? Give us a glimpse of what attracts attendees to your booth. We will happily accept any photo that shows public outreach, community engagement, and underscores the importance of water-sector work.

Check the gallery daily for a look into the work of colleagues from around the world and to vote for your favorites.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will WEF choose winners? When will winners be announced?

On October 30, 2018, WEF will choose three photos that have accrued the highest number of public votes over the 2-month submission period. Winners will be announced on the WEF Facebook page. The submitter of the photo with the highest number of votes will receive the contest’s grand prize. Submitters of the other two photos will each receive runner-up prizes.

What types of photos are you looking for?

For our “Word Out for Water” photo contest, we are looking for photos that depict water quality professionals performing public outreach and community engagement activities that teach others about responsible water use and lift the veil on what goes on in a water resource recovery facility. Our definition of "public outreach" is broad -- photos that show equipment manufacturers demonstrating their product to other water professionals are just as appreciated as photos from educational seminars at schools, libraries, and community centers.

All settings and subjects will be considered as long as the image is "safe for work" (i.e., no blood, gore, nudity, etc.).

Can I submit a photo of a colleague, or somebody besides myself?

Yes, but please be sure to secure the permission of all those featured in the photo. Any disputes arising from lack of proper permissions will be the responsibility of the submitter.

Can I submit an old photo?

Yes, but please indicate when the photo was taken during entry.

How will winners be notified?

When submitting a photo, entrants must provide their email address. Winners will be contacted through this email address to coordinate prize receipt. If no response is received, WEF may also contact winners via Facebook message.

Are there restrictions on who can participate in the contest?

No. Entrants and/or voters need not be WEF Members, nor do they need to “Like” the WEF Facebook page to participate. However, WE&T Magazine is only sent to WE&T subscribers. Special orders are available upon request through the WEF customer service telephone line.

Please note that while there are also no residential restrictions on entrants, only submitters with a U.S., Canada, or Mexico mailing address may receive prizes.

Is there a limit on how many photos I can submit? On how many times I can vote?

Anybody can submit as many photos as they would like during the contest submission period. Each individual Facebook user can cast one vote per day on a single photo of their choice.

Do participants need to have a valid Facebook account to submit photos/vote on photos?

Yes. All WE&T photo contests will be housed via the WEF Facebook page, which requires visitors to have their own respective Facebook accounts to access.

Will participants who do not win the contest be notified?

No. Only three winners will be notified on October 30, 2018. If you do not receive a notification from WEF, please submit photos for a future contest.

What rights to my photograph do I retain?

You retain your rights to your photograph; however, by entering the contest, entrants grant WEF a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to display, distribute, reproduce and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for any educational, promotional, publicity, exhibition, archival, scholarly and all other standard WEF purposes. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. WEF will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.

I have other questions.

Please contact WE&T editor Justin Jacques at [email protected] with any further questions.
