Water and wastewater infrastructure has long faced a deficit of investment resulting in a growing backlog of capital investment needs. When combined with growing infrastructure needs from climate change and emerging health risks like PFAS, utilities and communities are continually seeking new sources of funding and new ways to leverage existing funding. With the potential for declining federal appropriations for water infrastructure, the need is even more urgent for communities and utilities to be proactive in identifying new approaches to financing needed infrastructure.

In response, the Water Environment Federation is bringing together experts from around the country for an interactive workshop to discuss the future of financing water infrastructure, with a focus on the evolving role of the State Revolving Fund programs and other federal funding sources and the potential for private investment. Attendees of this workshop will be able to:

  • Identify recent trends of federal investment in water infrastructure and a range of possibilities looking forward.
  • Compare and contrast different options for incorporate private financing into public infrastructure projects.
  • Provide key input to shape future discussions and advocacy regarding federal investment in water infrastructure.
  • Raise important questions and recommendations regarding the future of water infrastructure finance, including how communities can facilitate private investment in local infrastructure.
