Water & Wastewater Treatment

More than 16,000 publicly owned water resource recovery facilities operate in the United States. Skilled engineers and operators work together to ensure new and updated facilities continue to protect public health and the environment.

Water and Wastewater Treatment Resources

The featured resources below are just a sample of everything WEF has to offer. Search our entire website and technical resource database for more.

Design of Water Resource Recovery Facilities

The 7th edition of WEF Manual of Practice No. 8 is the principal reference for contemporary facility design practices of wastewater engineering.

Schroepfer Innovative Facility Design Medal

This medal recognizes excellence in conceiving and directing the design of a project to achieve substantial cost savings or economic benefit while achieving environmental objectives.

MUNICIPAL RESOURCE RECOVERY DESIGN COMMUNITY

MRRDC serves as the home of WEF members who share common technical interests in municipal wastewater treatment design and are drawn together to be the stewards of this knowledge area. The community develops, recommends, supports, and conducts programs of general and technical information relating to the advancement of municipal wastewater treatment design practices.

WATER REUSE COMMUNITY

This community’s volunteers serve as WEF’s technical resources on water recycling, from planning and public outreach to treatment processes and distribution. Community members develop workshops, technical sessions, books, and webcasts; author articles; and provide comment on water reuse policies and positions.

Where the Water Community Connects

Biosolids Resource Recovery

Safe and sustainable: Biosolids management transforms wastewater solids into odor-controlled, pathogen-reduced agricultural products, strictly regulated for environmental safety.

Collection Systems and Conveyance

Sanitary sewers safely transport household and commercial wastewater through underground systems, improving public health and meeting modern infrastructure standards.

Government & Regulatory Affairs

Empower water professionals with knowledge and tools to influence public policy-WEF advocacy promotes awareness and engagement on key water issues.

Public Health

The water sector and its systems protect public and ecological health. Using the data that can be collected through smart water technologies provides additional insights to address complex public health issues.

Stormwater & Watershed Management

Take a comprehensive look at how all water resources, including uplands, drainage basins, wetlands, stormwater, surface water, and groundwater interact.
