The Water Environment Federation (WEF), Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF), and the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) are pleased to announce the Nutrient Symposium 2015 in San Jose, California. 


This event continues WEF’s tradition of addressing the challenge of sustainable nutrient management through education and sharing of best practices. This symposium is dedicated to serving practitioners involved in addressing the nutrient issues in today’s world. The focus for this event will be on the practical design and process operations of dealing with nutrient issues across the globe. The intended audience for the event will be utility staff, consultants, regulators, and vendors who are addressing nutrients at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs).  

The conference program will be composed of 15–20 minute presentations, short briefings, and interactive facilitated discussion in every session.   

Session topics include nutrient removal and recovery; BNR optimization and process demonstrations; research and new technologies; operations; process control optimization; nutrient management lessons learned; and compliance strategies. 

The event will also include a pre-conference workshop, facility tour, and an exhibition.

Nutrient Management: How to Get Started

Registration to the workshop includes a copy of the WEF Nutrient Roadmap.

In order to meet more stringent nutrient limits or drive towards resource recovery, utilities often are seeking how to move forward and address all the competing needs in the potentially complex world of nutrient management. This workshop seeks to present the options available to WRRFs in a straightforward manner. The workshop will provide an overview of regulatory approaches, treatment technologies, nutrient removal product recovery, and discuss potential paths to net-zero nutrient discharges. The focus will be on interactions between nutrient removal and other processes, understanding the environment, evaluation of alternatives, risk management, and product development.

Facility Tour

San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility Tour

Visit the largest BNR facility in Northern California. Observe an intricate 8–10 hour treatment process that cleans wastewater from 1.4 million residents in the Silicon Valley. Over 75% of nitrogen and 90% of phosphorus is removed using no significant chemical addition—a miraculous process that simulates the way nature cleans water.
