Would appreciate hearing any experiences others might have had with Spiral Heat exchangers, esp if can be contrasted with tube style, going back to Dorr-Oliver or say Alfa Laval. Recently got Spirals as part of plant upgrade, have heard no war stories as of yet and that worries me. Not a big believer that no news is good news. Also besides the standard method of opening up to clean out or check for rags, erosion/corrosion wondered if anyone tried any sort of mild acid cleaning to deal with removing any scaling that may reduce heat transfer. Past experience is plugging of heat exhangers can result in scale buildup that can only be removed with some kind of mechanical or chemical cleaning of tubes. Presume that is not a unique experience but wonder how this compares with Spiral Heat Exchangers esp since you can not simply remove tubes for soaking in a mild acid. Our experience with tubes is generally mechanical cleaning is only mildly effective.

Thanks, Rich
