Microconstituents in Biosolids: Presence, Gaps, and a Glimpse Into the Future

12/16/2009 - 2:00 pm − 3:30 pm Eastern Time

Introduction:

This webcast will provide you with a snapshot of what is currently known about the presence of microconstituents in biosolids, what the key information gaps are toward determining what detection really means, and what you need to begin to think about and plan for now regarding biosolids for a Sustainable Future.

The latter goal will be achieved through a thought-provoking presentation on biosolids and sustainable practices by Bill Toffey, Principal at Effluential Synergies LLC, formerly City Energy Manager with the Philadelphia Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, and Biosolids Utilization Manager for over 20 years with Philadelphia Water Department.

Rick Stevens, of USEPA OST HECD, will present the results of the Targeted National Sewage Sludge Survey (TNSSS) Report http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/biosolids/tnsss-overview.html regarding what is currently known about the presence of microconstituents in biosolids.

George O’Connor, Professor of Environmental Soil Chemistry at the University of Florida will present an overview of what is currently known regarding potential effects associated with the presence of microconstituents in biosolids and what are the key information gaps needed for performing hazard assessments. Dr. O’Connor’s presentation will include the latest information regarding a State of the Science Report he is developing with the Principal Investigator Chris Higgins, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, as part of a Water Environment Research Foundation project exploring this issue.
