Who is Eligible? High school students (grades 9-12) who enter a water-related project in a regional science fair, such as those affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), are eligible to participate in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition.
Theoretical and applied science projects are welcome, as well as research aimed at solving community water problems. Projects may focus on local, regional, national, or global issues. It is essential that all projects use a research-oriented approach, which means they must use scientifically accepted methodologies for experimentation, monitoring, and reporting, including statistical analysis.
For more information about ISEF, contact Science Service at www.sciserv.org or 202-785-2255. To confirm eligibility of other science fairs or competitions not affiliated with ISEF, email sjwp@wef.org or call 703-535-5263.
Entry into the State SJWP Competition Entry Deadline: April 15, 2008* *State deadlines may vary. For information on your state, consult the State Deadlines and Awards List.
To be eligible for the state competition, students must register online and electronically submit their research. There are no specific paper guidelines. Teams of up to three students may enter; however, only one student representative is guaranteed sponsorship to the national competition.
Based on the papers or personal interviews at designated science fairs, WEF member associations will identify the best water-related science project in each state. Most state winners will be announced May 1, 2008.
WEF member associations sponsor a student and their teacher's travel to attend the national competition. They may also offer other special awards and incentives.
Entry into the U.S. National SJWP Competition Entry Deadline: Friday, May 23, 2008 (State Winners Only)
Prior to this competition, state SJWP winners must modify their written research paper to meet the National Paper Guidelines, and submit it electronically no later than Friday, May 23, 2008.
To be eligible, state winners must attend the on-site national competition in Orlando, Florida, June 19-21, 2008. In Orlando, students will display and present their project to a panel of distinguished judges. They will participate in a three-day, all-expense-paid, social and educational program culminating in an awards program that is hosted by the Florida Water Environment Association.
