Advancing water reuse is taking a big step forward as a new project gets underway to develop a State Water Reuse Regulatory Guide. Through a partnership that includes WEF, the WateReuse Association, the American Water Works Association, the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, and the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, this guide is set to become a go-to resource for anyone working in water reuse, offering clear guidance and best practices that will ultimately empower states to provide regulatory clarity for utilities and communities across the nation.
This project directly supports circular water economy (CWE) principles – one of WEF’s key strategic focus areas – by promoting water reuse and resource recovery. Clear regulatory frameworks at the state level are essential for communities to pursue reuse, helping unlock up to $47 billion in potential value from CWE. These frameworks, together with effective permitting processes, are critical to enabling and accelerating water reuse efforts. 
Reuse experts and stakeholders from around the nation will be brought together to share their insights, identify challenges, and help steer the guide’s direction. While the full goals and scope of the State Reuse Regulatory Guide are still being defined, early engagement will include tackling critical topics and outlining desired results.
