The forward-thinking initiatives of 34 water utilities are being recognized by the Water Environment Federation as Utilities of the Future Today as they reimagine partnerships and community engagement, watershed stewardship, and recovery of resources such as water, energy, and nutrients.

The Utility of the Future Today recognition program celebrates the achievements of water utilities that transform from a traditional wastewater treatment system to a resource recovery center and leader in the overall sustainability and resilience of the communities they serve. The utilities will be honored during a ceremony on October 11 at WEFTEC in New Orleans.

Utility of the Future Today is a partnership program of WEF, the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), The Water Research Foundation (WRF), the WateReuse Association, and the U.S. Water Alliance, with input from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

These utilities are being recognized for the first time:

• City of Farmington Wastewater Treatment Plant - Farmington, Utah
• City of Memphis Stiles Wastewater Treatment Facility – Memphis, Tenn.
• City of Surprise – Surprise, Arix.
• Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District – DeKalb, Ill.
• Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission – Springfield, Ore.
• North Hudson Sewerage Authority – Hoboken, N.J.
• Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission - Newark, N.J.
• Philadelphia Water Department – Philadelphia, Pa.
• San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District - San Bernardino, Calif.

These utilities are being recognized for a second year for a new area of performance:

• Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) – Alexandria, Va.
• Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department – Tucson, Ariz.
• City of Westminster Water Reclamation Facility – Reisterstown, Md.
• Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (Central San) – Martinez, Calif.
• Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) – Pittsburgh, Pa.
• City of Zeeland Clean Water Plant – Zeeland, Mich.
• Town of Cary Utilities – Cary, N.C.

These utilities are being recognized for a third year in a new area of performance:

• Miami-Dade County Water & Sewer Department – Miami
• King County, Wastewater Treatment Division – Seattle
• Knoxville Utilities Board – Knoxville, Tenn.
• LOTT Clean Water Alliance – Olympia, Wash.
• Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District – Sacramento, Calif.
• Trinity River Authority of Texas – Arlington, Texas
• City of Pompano Beach Utilities Department – Pompano Beach, Fla.
• Eastern Municipal Water District – Perris, Calif.
• Holland Board of Public Works (Holland Area Water Reclamation Facility) – Holland, Mich.

These utilities are being recognized for a fourth year in a new area of performance:

• City of Grand Rapids – Grand Rapids, Mich.
• Gwinnett County Water Resources – Lawrenceville, Ga.
• Broward County Water and Wastewater Operations - North Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant – Pompano Beach, Fla.

These utilities are being recognized for a fifth year in a new area of performance:

• DC Water – Washington
• Charlotte Water – Charlotte, N.C.
• City of St. Cloud - St. Cloud, Minn.
• Toho Water – Kissimmee, FL

These utilities are being recognized for a sixth year in a new area of performance:

• City of Tucson Water Department – Tucson, Ariz.
• Clean Water Services – Hillsboro, Ore.
