WEF was very sad to hear of the passing of former Congressman and water champion John D. Dingell (D-MI) on Feb. 7. Congressman Dingell represented the Detroit region for nearly 60 years and was the longest serving member of Congress in American history.

Dingell helped author the Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and Endangered Species Act and played a prominent role in the passage of the Clean Water Act, as well.  He served as Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee for many years.  In addition, he was a healthcare champion who stood by President Obama’s side when he signed his healthcare bill into law.  (Roll Call, 2/7/19)

In 2011, WEF honored Rep. Dingell with the Public Officials Award for his service to entire the water sector and especially in his home state of Michigan.  He was instrumental in getting financial support for the Rouge River Wet Weather Demonstration Project which funded a CSO program in the Detroit metro area in the early 1990s.  He will be missed.
