WEF staffer Megan Livak blogs about all the exciting events planned by the Students & Young Professionals at WEFTEC 2018!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…it’s WEFTEC season!! It feels good to give back, and the Students and YP’s have a full roster of exciting events benefitting both the New Orleans Community as well as the future stewards of our industry.

Friday, September 28th marks the 6th Annual Water Palooza at the Joseph A. Craig Charter School. At the event, students travel to various booths to learn about the local water environment. Our goal is to engage elementary school students in hands-on and demonstrative activities that promote the value of water and encourage students to become stewards of their own water environment. It’s a great way for both the SYPC and WEF members to educate the community about the importance of water.

If you are looking to give back and aren’t afraid to get a little dirty, come on out to the 11th Annual Community Service Project, which will be taking place on Saturday, September 29th at the Treme Community Recreation Center. The Center suffers from poor drainage and flooding due to runoff from their slanted roof flowing into an existing planter box. We will be working to transform the existing planter box into a bioswale which will capture, detain and treat the stormwater runoff from the slanted roof to alleviate flooding and improve water quality. We will also be installing a green infrastructure graphic to educate the community on the importance of drainage.

On Sunday, September 30th, the SYPC is excited to welcome 22 schools representing 20-member associations and 3 countries to the Student Design Competition. The Student Design Competition promotes real-world design experience in two different competitions: Environmental Design and Wastewater Design.

Rounding out the SYPC events are the Annual Student Chapter Meeting, the Young Professionals Committee Meeting and the Career Fair on Monday, October 1st. Come hang out after a jam packed few days and network with the Students and YP’s during the Black and Veatch Student Appreciation Reception and the WEF Young Professionals Reception on Monday night.

I look forward to seeing you all in a few short weeks!
