On May 18, the EPA released a final rule that said about 500 industrial or federal facilities will collect information this year to document the volume of 172 types of PFAS they release, dispose, or recycle.

The 172 chemicals are the first per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that the facilities have had to report to the EPA’s toxic release inventory.

More information below:

  • Facilities that release 100 or more pounds of the so-called forever chemicals must report the data. The first reports are due July 1, 2021.
  • The facilities will collectively spend about $1 million a year to gather the information, the EPA said.
  • The rule (RIN: 2070-AK63) implements a requirement in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 and largely repeats information the agency released earlier this year.
