July 26, 2017 — An effort by wipes manufactures to block a Washington, D.C. local law to reduce the damages caused by wipes failed in the House of Representatives last week thanks to the ample support of WEF Water Advocates.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) offered and then withdrew an amendment that would have revoked a law passed by the D.C. Council that will require that wipes by labeled “Do Not Flush” and a dispensability criteria be established so that when wipes do get flushed they will break down. The D.C. law is the first law in the nation to require labeling and dispersibility for personal hygiene products like non-woven wipes.  The attempt to revoke the law would have put the Congress on record as opposing local ordinances against wipes.

WEF members sent 226 letters using the Water Advocates grassroots advocacy portal asking Congress to reject a rider to revoke the DC law.  Thank you to all the WEF members who sent letters.
