The phosphate reacts with molybdenum under reducing conditions to form a polymeric substance, generically known as a "molybdenum blue." It is not a true solution, but a colloid, which accounts for the sharply limited linear working range of the method.

The antimony that is generally added at trace levels is a catalyst, that accelerates the rate at which equilibrium is attained.
