Collections personnel at times must walk (or crawl) pipe a few hundred feet.  They have fall protection connected to their harness to the bottom of the pipe but must disconnect to walk the line.  What ideas are there for protecting the employee, retrieving an employee who may become injured and making this job easier.

I would look real hard at wheeled sleds (kind of like what cameras are mounted on.)  Walking/crawling through sewers seems like an accident waiting to happen.  I would think the Utility's liability is fairly significant in such situations.  A safety line could be connected to the sled for retrieval in case the inspector should pass out.  Is CCTV not an option here??

CCTV has reduced the need to make such walks however it's not eliminated it.  I would think all wastewater collection agencies would at times need personnel to do this.  I've got some ideas now for keeping the fall protection cable attached above ground while addressing the cable change of direction.  We'll be testing it soon.

To all:

There is no reason anyone should have to walk or crawl unattached to above ground rescue.  As stated, there are cameras that can be used for this purpose.  We have used rafts and boats that are connected from up and downstream while providing supplied air for anyone that has to do the internal observation.

There are associated costs but it is better to act safely in the inspection of large diameter storm, sanitary or combined sewers.
