Orange County Water District Groundwater Replenishment System

On Jan. 10, the Orange County (Calif.) Water District (OCWD) celebrated the fifth anniversary of its Groundwater Replenishment System.

In the 1990s, OCWD and the Orange County Sanitation District  (OCSD) joined efforts to develop the GWRS water purification program.  OCWD needed to increase its groundwater recharge volume to 132,500 m 3 /d (35 mgd) from 56,800 m 3 /d (15 mgd) to prevent seawater intrusion, and OCSD faced the possibility of building a second ocean outfall to dispose of wastewater effluent.
