The PH-1 accessory (patent filed) plugs into a
standard Apple dock connector and uses a Sensorex pH electrode to measure pH
with accuracy to 0.01 pH. The free app displays pH, millivolts, ambient
temperature, and solution temperature in real time. The CE-marked device
supports one, two, three, or more calibration points and sends readings via
e-mail for later analysis. When used with a GPS-enabled device, the pH meter
app will record measurements with time stamp and geographic coordinates,
eliminating transcription errors and improving efficiency. Powered from the
Apple device, the meter requires no supplemental energy source. Its pH
measurement range is zero to 14, and it operates in ambient temperatures of 0°C
to 40°C, in solutions of 0°C to 100°C. Data history can be grouped by date or location
and exported individually or in comma-separated value format via e-mail. Sensorex

Application Note details the development for analysis of microcystins in
drinking water by direct injection on EVOQ EliteTM
liquid-chromatography mass-spectrometer triple quadrupole. Microcystins are
cyclic heptapeptides produced by cyanobacteria in lakes and reservoirs that
undergo seasonal algal bloom. Microcystin is considered toxic to animals and
humans, with widespread adoption of World Health Organization guidelines of 1
µg/L in drinking water. The application detects parts per billion
concentrations of microcystins. Bruker Chemical and Applied

The Dräger X-am 5100 is designed to detect hydrogen fluoride,
hydrogen chloride, hydrogen peroxide, and hydrazine reactive gases. The monitor
is suited for monitoring alkylation units in the petrochemical industry,
checking hydrogen fluoride during the injection process for the extraction of
crude oil, testing hydrogen peroxide during the bleaching process in
pulp-and-paper production, monitoring sterilization units used in the medical
field, and monitoring hydrazine used for propulsion. The special design
prevents reactive gases from depositing on the housing (gas adsorption). Direct
gas entry to the sensor, fast sensor response times, and precise measurement
results are ensured. Audible, visual, and vibration alarms alert users. The
monitor is protected against dust and water ingress, and has an IP 54 rating. Dräger

electronic LCD encoder is fully electronic, solid-state, and
field-programmable. The system features an easy-to-read high-resolution
nine-digit LCD display. The display toggles between nine digits, six digits,
rate of flow, and meter model. Status indicators and alarms are sent as part of
the high-resolution encoded output for endpoints capable of receiving extended
messages. All encoders come factory-programmed to customer order
specifications. Utilities also may program the unit of measure, meter type,
meter model, billing units, and rate-of-flow parameters. A tamper-resistant
seal screw prohibits unauthorized removal of the encoder, and the internal
sensors can detect and report attempted encoder removal, as well as magnetic
interference. Badger Meter (Milwaukee).

The fracking kit measures increased concentrations of barium,
chloride, nickel, sulfate, bromide, and potassium ions, as well as turbidity and
changes in acidity. There are no messy, complicated procedures to follow and no
toxic chemicals to dispose of. The kit consists of a LabNavigator (required for
all measurements), a full-range heavy-duty pH sensor, a turbidity sensor, a
conductivity sensor, and a user’s guide for the nonchemist. It works by simply
connecting one or more of the sensors to the LabNavigator, ensuring accuracy by
using one of the included nontoxic standards, dipping the sensor into a sample
of well water, and pressing a button. The system stores the test results for
future use. The digital readout on the LabNavigator shows results in an
instant. Forston Labs (Fort Collins, Colo.).
