Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) staff joined forces on Aug. 24 to raise money to equip four Washington, D.C.-area schools with World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) classroom kits. 

To celebrate National Water Quality Month, the WEF Eco team organized a bake sale, where other staff purchased drinks and desserts, including coffee donated by Starbucks (Seattle), cupcakes donated by Cupcake Delight (Arlington, Va.), and other items prepared by staff, to meet a fund-raising goal of $200. The money raised went to purchase four WWMD classroom kits for Imagine Hope Community Charter School (Washington D.C.), J.C. Parks Elementary School (Indian Head, Md.), Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital (Washington D.C.), and St. Michael the Archangel School (Silver Spring, Md.).

The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) will hold its inaugural Stormwater Symposium 2012 in cooperation with the Chesapeake Water Environment Association (Sparks, Md.) July 18–20 at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center. WEF seeks abstracts and workshop proposals for this event. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 26.

The symposium will focus on national issues, including the proposed national stormwater rulemaking, regional issues, developing technologies, and management approaches. Abstracts should address the key topics of green infrastructure planning, performance, and case studies; mitigating combined sewer overflows using stormwater-based solutions; best management practice performance and monitoring; stormwater funding and utility creation; public communication and outreach in stormwater management; municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) permitting challenges and solutions; industrial stormwater management case studies; stormwater research studies; erosion and sediment control planning, design, implementation, and monitoring; and innovative approaches to stormwater management.

Educate those in your community about their role in maintaining clean water and supporting water and wastewater infrastructure.

Stormwater Runoff: Take It Personally is a new bill stuffer developed by the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) to educate people about the environmental effects of polluted stormwater runoff and what they can do to prevent this source of water pollution.

The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) is revising Manual of Practice No. 31, which will be titled Process Modeling for Designers (formerly Introduction to Process Modeling for Designers). Process modeling rapidly is becoming the default tool of choice for process design. The intention of this publication is to expand MOP 31,include more practical guidance on using process models for design, and use this material as the basis for future training courses.

Publication of the manual is set for May 2013. The project, being led by Andy Shaw and Bruce Johnson, officially launched in August, and the first draft is scheduled to be ready for review in January.
