Measuring grit accumulation in a tank

I want to measure the level of grit/sand accumulated in an anoxic tank (MLE process) without draining the tank. The grit could be several feet deep. Do you have any tips for an effective, yet fairly inexpensive tool that would do this? I considered a "sludge judge" but doubt that would push through the grit to the tank floor.

 4" pvc pipe with a cap and a 1" hole in the cap, mark the pipe like a sludge judge - Should push down to the top of the grit but not into the grit. Check aginst the plans. No plans? Rebar should make it through the grit to the bottom of the tank.

It would not be to costly or complicated to take a 1" or 2" p.v.c. pipe with a fitting that would allow it to adapt to either air or water on the top, submerge to tank bottom then mark the water line on the pipe with something that will not be removed easily then re-submerge then add water or air under pressure to blast away sand while pushing down on the pipe, it should be quite easy.
