April 28 --The government has signed P1-billion grant agreements with Japan for projects on water supply and for minimizing maritime-related disasters as part of the Philippines' development initiative.

The grant agreements aim to improve access to and adequacy of basic infrastructure services and the creation of a safer and more secure environment, in line with the objectives of the Updated Philippine Development Plan 2011-2016, said the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

The first agreement, involving nearly P501million ( 1.165 billion yen ), is earmarked for the project to improve the water supply system in Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD).

The improvement of MCWD, which will be implemented from April 2014 to March 2017 , will provide an integrated, more accurate and real time data collection and analysis through the use of scientific decision-support systems.

The second grant agreement of about P500 million ( 1.152 billion yen ) is for the project to enhance coastal communications systems in the country.

The project involves the supply of communications equipment for search and rescue operations, for implementation from this month until May 2017 .

The project aims to minimize maritimerelated disasters and enable effective and efficient command and control within the Philippine Coast Guard and other related agencies nationwide.
