  <description><![CDATA[Decay of microbes is occurring at all times resulting in release of cell contents, including ammonia.  The ammonia is oxidized under oxic conditions during the aeration of the tank masking this release.  When the air is shut off during the settle and decant stages, the ammonia accumulates because it is not oxidized.
