Utility Management Resources
Water and wastewater utility leaders face a variety of management challenges.  These can include the demands of aging infrastructure and/or expanding populations; decreased grant monies and rate payer capacity constraints; new and more stringent regulatory requirements; increased public expectations for service, performance, and transparency; and work force demographics.  To respond to these challenges, WEF is working with its members and partners to develop a variety of management initiatives; resources; and educational, training, and networking opportunities.

In addition to the materials listed on the left, other resources that may be useful to Utility Managers include the following:

Conferences and Training:
  • The Utility Management Conference™
    The 2008 Conference, Tomorrow's Water, Today's Issues, will offer a multitude of beneficial workshops, sessions, and panels that convey innovative tools, explore successful techniques, and share emerging solutions for addressing today's water and wastewater needs and future challenges.
  • WEFTEC
    Utility management is a major focus of the WEFTEC educational program that provides an extensive range of workshops and technical sessions specifically tailored to the needs of the utility manager.
  • WEF Seminars
    WEF’s seminar program includes topics of interest to the utility manager including asset management and rate setting.
  • The Water and Wastewater Leadership Center
    Leadership has become a topic of great interest for public water and wastewater utility managers. To meet this need, the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA), the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and WEF have joined together in the development of a joint-venture Water and Wastewater Leadership Center for public utility leaders.

Volunteer and Networking Opportunities:

  • Water Is Life, and Infrastructure Makes It Happen™
    One of WEF's growing public communication programs, Water Is Life, and Infrastructure Makes It Happen™ is a grassroots program designed to educate the general public, local leaders, and media about the value of water and wastewater infrastructure and the importance of investing in its long-term stability.
  • WEF's Utility Management Committee
    The Utility Management Committee is involved in helping develop materials and programs that will assist utility managers. Over the past year, the committee has worked on several initiatives focused on utility quality improvement programs. This includes the QualServe program (self-assessment and peer reviews that help utilities achieve total quality performance) and the development of a Benchmarking Clearinghouse.
  • WEF's Environmental Management Systems Committee
    One of WEF's newest committees, the EMS Committee meets annually at WEFTEC® in October. Scope of committee activities include:
    • Development of workshops, seminars, training, and technical sessions;
    • Development of publications related to environmental management topics;
    • Development of public outreach materials expressing pollution prevention and environmental management issues.
