Misidentified Eggs

In the February WE&T, a letter to the editor claims that the background shown in the Adam Sandler and Kevin James Brooklyn-based movie “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” is of a wastewater treatment plant in Los Angeles, Calif. I am proud to say that scene was indeed filmed in Brooklyn, N.Y., and the digester eggs in question belong to New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP)!

The Newtown Creek WPCP is located on 21 ha (53 ac) in Greenpoint-Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was originally built in 1967, and with a dry weather capacity of 1.2 million m3/d (310 mgd), is the largest of New York City’s 14 wastewater treatment plants. It takes in flows from sections of Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan.

For solids handling, due to site space issues, gravity sludge thickeners are being replaced with 24 centrifuge thickeners, and eight, 11-million-L (3-million-gal) egg-shaped digesters were also built along with two, 9-million-L (2.4-million-gal) steel sludge storage tanks.
