Water and wastewater utilities have a long and distinguished history of protecting public health and the environment. Following the events of September 11, 2001 and subsequent natural disasters, all levels of government, as well as the private sector, are partnering with water utilities to prevent, respond, and recover from natural disasters and manmade (terrorist) threats.

What's New?
- National Infrastructure Protection Plan Updated
The National Infrastructure Protection Plan provides the unifying structure for the integration of a wide range of efforts for enhanced protection and resiliency of the nation's critical infrastructure key resources (CIKR) into a single national program. The Plan was most recently updated in January 2009. Download pdf or visit the NIPP website.
- National Incident Management System (NIMS) Updated in December 2008
NIMS provides a systematic, proactive approach to helping government departments and agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector work together to prevent, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents, regardless of cause, size, location, or complexity, in order to reduce environmental harm and the loss of life and property. NIMS works hand in hand with the National Response Framework (NRF), who provides the structure and mechanisms for national-level policy for incident management. View pdf. Visit NIMS website.
