The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) newsletter Water Environment Laboratory Solutions needs two new editorial advisory board (EAB) members. Volunteer EAB members perform an extremely valuable service to WEF, lending their professional expertise to WEF periodicals and serving as our “eyes and ears” in the field.

EABs are not peer review boards, nor do they approve editorial content. Rather, EAB members serve in an advisory capacity to the newsletter editor, providing news story ideas, feedback on features, and other suggestions. Those interested must be able to provide a minimum time commitment of 2 to 3 hours a month and participate in bimonthly Solutions EAB conference phone calls. The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) is developing a new Manual of Practice on membrane bioreactors (MBRs). WEF’s Technical Practice Committee is looking for individuals willing to serve as reviewers. This effort is being led by WEF members Glen Daigger and Adrienne Menniti, both from CH2M Hill (Englewood, Colo.).

The manual will provide the wastewater practitioner with the information necessary to evaluate MBRs for a particular application, size and select the necessary equipment, and supervise the final design of a MBR facility. It also will provide an introduction and overview of MBR technology.

The proposed outline for the book is as follows:

• Chapter 1 — Introduction.
• Chapter 2 — Membrane Fundamentals.
• Chapter 3 — Biological Process Fundamentals.
• Chapter 4 — MBR Process Design.
• Chapter 5 — MBR Facility Design.
• Chapter 6 — MBR Operation.

The draft of the manual will be available for review in mid-June. Reviewers must be able to work closely with WEF staff and dedicate expertise and time to ensuring the development of a high-quality manual according to the publication development schedule. As the first day of spring approaches, so does the opportunity to begin monitoring local waterways for 2010. March 22 marks the beginning of the World Water Monitoring Day^TM (WWMD) monitoring window. The international education and outreach program builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens in basic monitoring of local waterbodies. In 2009, more than 120,000 people reported data from around the globe.

WWMD, officially celebrated on Sept. 18, allows citizens to monitor and report data to the WWMD database from March 22 through Dec. 31. The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) and International Water Association (IWA; London, England) coordinate the program and plan to expand participation to 1 million people in 100 countries by 2012. Participants use WWMD test kits to monitor four water quality indicators — dissolved oxygen, acidity, temperature, and turbidity — and submitted results are compiled and made available through the WWMD Web site.
