Stockholm Junior Water Prize Online Journal to Debut in Fall 2006  

Alexandria, VA – The Water Environment Federation (WEF) announces Journal of the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize - For the Future, From the Future, a new electronic publication of winning entries to the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) state competition. Published annually, the journal will debut in the fall of 2006 and feature original papers related to water quality, water resource management, water protection, and water and wastewater treatment.

The non-subscription journal provides students with another vehicle for showcasing their research. An editorial board, chaired by Stockholm Water Prize Laureates Dr. William Mitsch and Dr. Takashi Asano, will oversee direction and quality of content. “This new journal will merge the natural aptitude that young students have in the electronic and computer world with the science and engineering of water resources,” said Mitsch, Professor of Natural Resources and Environmental Science and Director of the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park School of Natural Resources at Ohio State University. “It is bound to have an impact on the students and ultimately the future of our water environment.”

The purpose of the SJWP, the most prestigious international youth award for a high school water science research project, is to increase students’ interest in water-related issues and research, and to sensitize them – as future leaders - to global water challenges. “This new journal will challenge young minds to come up with new ideas on water,” said Asano, Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of California at Davis. “Both Professor Mitsch and I welcome the opportunity to review the thought-provoking ideas and presentations of our next generation of water leaders.”

In the United States, WEF and its member associations (MAs) organize the U.S. national, state, and local SJWP competitions with support from ITT Industries and The Coca-Cola Company. WEF MAs select state SJWP winners and sponsor the student, and student's science teacher, to attend the national competition scheduled for June 22-24 in Atlanta, Georgia. The U.S. winner will join representatives from over 30 countries at the international competition during World Water Week, August 20-26 in Stockholm, Sweden.
