NEBRASKA'S MOHAMED DAHAB NAMED VICE PRESIDENT OF THE WATER ENVIRONMENT FEDERATION

Alexandria, VA - Mohamed Dahab, Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln), has been elected Vice President of the Water Environment Federation (WEF), an international technical, scientific, and educational water quality organization. He was elected to the post on Tuesday, October 5 in New Orleans during WEFTEC®.04, the Federation's 77th annual technical conference and exhibition (October 2-6).

Dahab has been an active member of the Nebraska Water Environment Association (NWEA) for many years, serving as chair on numerous committees, a member of the executive board, vice president, president-elect, and president. He served as a WEF director from 2000 until 2003 and was a member of the 2001–2002 and 2002-2003 WEF Executive Committees.

In addition to serving as Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nebraska, Dahab is also director of the university's Environmental Engineering Program. He helped establish a WEF student chapter at the university in 1997 and served as Vice-Chair of WEF's Students and Young Professionals Committee and a member of the Program Committee. He has been a WEFTEC participant since 1988 and has presented 12 papers at the conference. He also has published four papers in Water Environment Research and is a member of the journal's Board of Editorial Review. He was nominated for the Gascoigne Medal in 1998, and won the Arthur Sidney Bedell Award in 1998.

Widely recognized for his research on removing nitrate from water and wastewater using biological denitrification and managing risk for nitrate-contaminated groundwater supplies, Dahab is a widely published author and participates internationally with various university programs in Austria, Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Korea, and Spain. He also is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (Reston, VA), the American Water Works Association (Denver, CO), the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (Urbana, IL), the International Water Association (London), the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE; Annapolis, MD) and the American Society for Engineering Education (Washington, DC).

A graduate of the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA) with a B.S. in civil engineering, Dahab went on to Iowa State University (Ames, IA) to obtain a M.S. and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering. He was selected as a Fulbright Research Professor and participated in the program at the Vienna (Austria) University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Dahab is married and has three children.
