Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Operator

WWTP operators remove pollutants from wastewater so that it is safe to discharge to receiving waters. The process can involve settling, biological treatment, flocculation, coagulation and settling as well as disinfection and filtration. Solids handling is also part of the wastewater treatment process. Many plants will be run for 24 hours which may require working nights. Some of the typical dutues are:

  • Operate/ maintain pumps and valves
  • Read and adjust various types of instrumentation which control equipment and processes
  • Operate chemical feed systems
  • Perform lab analysis
  • Troubleshoot process upsets
  • Maintain official records
  • Maintain certification through continuous training
  • Train new employees
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; Course work for certification eligibility; College level math and/or science will be helpful
Certificates, licenses: Varies depending on State requirements
Desirable traits or skills: Responsible individual with a basic understanding of and competency in math and science, willing to work shifts, attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, willing to learn
