Hydrologist

Hydrology is the study of how water moves through the water cycle on earth. It combines several fields: earth science, geology, geophysics, engineering, and chemistry. Hydrologists specialize in underground and surface water supplies used by a water agency. They determine:

  • how water moves as it evaporates, falls to earth as rain or snow, forms rivers and streams, soaks into the earth, and collects as ground water;
  • how water picks up contaminants as it moves from the clouds to our sinks;
  • where and how much water might be available in a certain area;
  • the source of contamination and best treatment methods for an entire groundwater basin or aquifer.
Education: A four-year or higher degree in earth science, geology, geophysics, engineering or chemistry with a speciality in water
Certificates, licenses: No
Desirable traits and skills: Strong in science, chemistry, math, geology, physics; analytical; good writing and communication skills; independently motivated; able to interpret complex information
