Hydrology is the study of how water moves through the water cycle on earth. It combines several fields: earth science, geology, geophysics, engineering, and chemistry. Hydrologists specialize in underground and surface water supplies used by a water agency. They determine:
- how water moves as it evaporates, falls to earth as rain or snow, forms rivers and streams, soaks into the earth, and collects as ground water;
- how water picks up contaminants as it moves from the clouds to our sinks;
- where and how much water might be available in a certain area;
- the source of contamination and best treatment methods for an entire groundwater basin or aquifer.
