Chemical Engineer

Chemical engineers understand how to use chemistry for practical applications, such as making industrial products like plastics and ceramics. In the water industry, they help design complex chemical systems to purify and disinfect water. The chemistry of that water is very important for our public health. Chemical engineers often work for consulting firms and provide their services to many types of industry, such as:

  • designing and implementing water treatment processes;
  • overseeing changes in the chemical treatment processes;
  • helping the agency respond to changes in legal requirement.
Education: Four or five-year degree in chemical engineering
Certificates, licenses: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.)
Desirable traits and skills: Strong in science and math, especially chemistry; analytical; strong writing and communication skills
