| Session 13: The Media Uncovered: Understanding Them So They Can Understand You |
Moderator: Julianne T. LaRock
Assisting: Charlotte Waddle
For any utility director or staff member, facing the media can feel more like being run through a grinder than a way to talk about their utility. But it doesn't have to be this way. There is a method to the madness. The media can serve as a link between the utility and the community when it comes to rate increases, new projects, promotion of industry initiatives, and much more. By understanding the process behind news gathering and what makes news, utilities can go a long way toward building their comfort level with the press and seeing an encounter with the media as an opportunity and not an attack. During this panel discussion, speakers from the utility industry and invited members of the media will field questions on how your organization can better work with the fourth estate. By offering a broad overview and better understanding of the news process, this session will help utilities think more strategically about their interactions with the media and see it as another tool in their efforts to engage the communities they serve.
