Wastewater treatment plants are transitioning to water resource recovery facilities – with nutrients, energy, and water as areas of greatest interest. In the last few years the potential to recover these products, especially phosphorus as a primary macro nutrient, has increased dramatically. This represents an emerging frontier for utilities to address both nutrient load limitations and to develop alternative revenue streams. However, technical, social, and economic challenges remain before treatment plants can realize the full potential of nutrient recovery from wastewater. In an ongoing research project (NTRY1R12), WERF has partnered with a lead global team of consultants, utilities, technology providers, and academic experts to achieve three main objectives:
- Characterize factors influencing the adoption of resource recovery systems.
- Provide a guidance tool for the implementation of resource recovery technologies at WWTPs.
- Experimentally evaluate extractive phosphorus recovery technologies.
This webcast features key findings and results by three principal investigators from the project (Ron Latimer, Wendell Khunjar, and Sam Jeyanayagam) as well as the chair of the new technology focus area (a joint initiative between WERF and WEF known as LIFT-TEP) on phosphorus recovery (Peter Schauer).
